Mike Ross describes his mothers place of work and the lingo
he learned as description of orders that the waitresses like his mother had to
carry out. He later tells of how that helped him to perceive instances in
other places of work such as barber shops and carpenters, the mindset and
thoughts that could pass through the heads of these workers he came to observe
over time. In a sense he was able to put himself in their shoes as if he
were them. What he is intending to say here I believe is that despite the
differences of the many different types of occupations and employees who work
them, the ability to understand each individuals positions is what separates
the people of the work place so they do not all seem as clones.
